Solidage Africa Foundation Sanitary Pad Project

In certain deprived communities in Ghana, most young girls miss school for days every blessed month. This is not because they fancy staying home or they don't have the zeal to study to become great women in this nation; but simply because they cannot afford sanitary pads during their monthly menstrual periods.

Most of these young girls tend to stay home and wait till after the menstrual flow and that is so unfair because they miss most of their school lessons. This also makes them lag behind their colleague's in academics especially the boys since they get the opportunity to be in school all year round. Girl child education is one of the most important building block in every society and some of these problems are undermined but it is really causing many girls in these communities their education.

The old clothes they use make them prone to certain urinary tract infections, in the first place and if not treated may lead to much more serious complications.

Also the old clothes used to substitute sanitary pads are not so comfortable in the first place. These old clothes do not absorb much hence the girls using such pads, stain their uniforms easily.  This causes a lot of embarrassment for these girls, so to avoid the unnecessary stress and humiliation they rather skip school for that period.  This may sound so trivial an issue but it is causing so many dreams to go down the drain, because some these girls decide to quit completely as a result of lack of a common necessity such as a sanitary pad.

Solidage Africa Foundation is looking forward to being a candle of hope for these young girls who have to stay away from school for days every month just because of sanitary pads.

We believe in girl child education and understand that "when you educate a girl you educate a nation" as Dr Kwegyir Aggrey said.

In this project sanitary pads would be given to girls of school going age in these deprived communities for free. And we are of the hope that this will help keep girls in school all year round, so as to continue their education without any hindrances.
